Post-Accident Testing: What Is It? Why take them into account?

If you work in the transportation sector and perform functions considered sensitive, such as operating a commercial vehicle (truck over 26,000lb or more than 16 passengers), you are subject to regulation through the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) alcohol and drug program.

This program aims to prevent and detect alcohol and drug abuse among employees in these roles early. To this end, the program establishes a series of rules and procedures that include, among others, the performance of different types of tests. One of them is the Post-Accident Test.

This test is performed after an accident occurs involving an employee performing sensitive safety functions. It aims to determine whether alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in the accident. This test is applied when the accident meets certain criteria set by each mode of transportation, such as the severity of injuries, property damage, employee liability, etc. The employee must remain available for testing and abstain from alcohol or drug use until the test is taken or instructed otherwise.

The DOT Alcohol and Drug Program is a critical pillar in ensuring safety on America's roads. Through Post-Accident Testing and other measures, this program contributes to the prevention and early detection of alcohol and drug abuse among employees performing sensitive safety functions in the transportation sector.

*IF YOU ARE GOING TO FILE A CLAIM TO THE INSURANCE, KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU ARE GOING TO NEED A DRUG AND ALCOHOL TEST.

The well-being of all citizens and the efficiency of transportation depend on strict adherence to these rules and procedures. Staying sober and alert on the road is a commitment that all transportation employees must make to ensure everyone's safety.
