According to recent data from the FMCSA’s Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, a total of 262.810 drug/alcohol violations were reported to the Clearinghouse since 2020. Just in 2024, 23.991 violation were reported.
Perhaps most shockingly of all, Clearinghouse data indicates there are currently 249.539 CDL drivers with drug or alcohol violations in the clearinghouse, and more than 90% of them are forbidden to drive, meaning they are disqualified from operating commercial vehicles due to a drug/alcohol violation.
Unsurprisingly, marijuana is the most common culprit for positive drug screens, with over 153,000 reported cases to the Clearinghouse since 2020. Followed by cocaine and amphetamines.
The top 3 states with most unqualified drivers are: Texas, California and Florida, be aware one of these drivers could be in your company and you may face penalties and fines.
The type of test where drivers test positive the most is the pre-employment test, with more than 150,000 reported cases, followed by random and post-accident tests.
